Research
Centres
-
Meteorological Research
Institute: Provides a number of small departments relevant to the study
of the atmosphere. Includes a specialised Climate
Research Department, which inturn provides a number of laboratories
studying the climate system, clouds and radiation, global warming, climate
analysis and also long-range weather forecasting. (Japan)
-
Natural
Environmental Research Council: Acts as a support aid to researchers,
encourages many types of environmental research. Site includes environmental
data resources, awards and training and also an industry gateway. (UK)
-
NOAA-CIRES Climate
Diagnostics Centre: Supplies regularly updated data and images, but
the main emphasis is placed on research. Projects
range from Pan-American climate studies to Water vapor climate studies.(US)
-
NOAA Climate Monitoring
and Diagnostics Laboratory: Conducts research related to atmospheric
constituents that are capable of forcing change in the climate of the earth
through modification of the atmospheric radiative environment, for example
greenhouse gases and aerosols, and those that may cause depletion of the
global ozone layer. (US)
-
NASA-Goddard
Climate and Radiation Branch The most impressive feature of this site
is the amount and quality of the research
projects. Projects range from the Smoke/Sulfate clouds
and radiation experiment to studies of Hydrological Processes and Climate.
(US)
-
NERC Dundee
Satellite Receiving Station: Maintains an up-to-date archive of images
from NOAA and SeaStar polar orbiting satellites. To view the images you
must fill in the on-line registration form, but registration is free and
the images are free. (UK)
Data/Information
Libraries
-
British Atmospheric
Data Centre: Provides catalogues of data including data in the form
of video sequences and CD Rom. Scientific documentation is provided, covering
all of the datasets held. (UK)
-
Radcliffe
Meteorological Station: Providing historical data and current observations
in the form of barometric pressure, dry and wet bulb temperatures, humidity,
soil temperatures, visibility, cloud cover and a number of other observations.
(UK)
-
The Meteorological Office Climate
Station Data: Data available from about 1000 climate stations over
the period 1959 to the present. Parameters include daily measurements of
temperature, rainfall and ground state and 0900 GMT measurements of temperature,
vapour pressure, relative humidity and soil temperature at several depths.
(UK)
-
The Meteorological Office Central
England Temperatures: Provides a monthly series, beginning in 1659;
and also a daily series (the average of the daily maximum and daily minimum
temperature) beginning in 1772. Manley compiled most of the monthly series,
but the series are presently upheld by the Climate Data Monitoring section.(UK)
-
The UK Weather
Information Site: Aids the understanding of the nature of climate in
the UK, through a number of individual localised weather centres. Past,
current and future weather data are available from various locations throughout
the British Isles.(UK)
-
Carbon Dioxide
Information Analysis Data Sets: An FTP service providing information
to help international researchers, policymakers, and educators evaluate
complex environmental issues associated with elevated levels of atmospheric
carbon dioxide (CO2) and other radiatively active trace gases, including
potential climate change. (US)
Education Materials
-
United Nations Enviroment Programme Climate
Change Factsheets: Provide a useful, detailed resource studying the
climate system, greenhouse gases and causes of climate change. (Switzerland)
-
United Nations Environment Programme and World Meteorological
organization Common Questions
about Climate Change: Discusses meteorological phenomena in conjunction
with climate change, and also discusses man's impact on climate change.
(US)
-
NOAA, National Climatic Data Centre Climate
Visualisation: Holds various climatic data sources in visual format,
including national weather service summaries, global summaries, historical
climatological network data and finally precipitation, temperature, and
drought data. Spatial and temporal specifications may be entered. (US)
-
Illustrated
Brochure for the Indian Peaks, Colorado, Front Range, U.S.A: Illustrates
geomorphological and hydrological processes occuring in this area, in conjunction
with the climatic characteristics of the site. (US)
-
Project
Atmosphere Australia: An Australian project which links schools for
joint projects and provides a wide range of information discussing the
weather and the atmosphere.
